Paul Devaney – Irish Seven Summits

Testimonial

I started working with Paulette during my preparation for expeditions to Antarctica and Everest as part of my Seven Summits challenge. I found the Yoga nidra and breathing techniques particularly useful and worked closely with Paulette in developing visualisation recordings to use on the high mountain to help with composure and focus during the more difficult parts of my climbs. Paulettes attention to detail and hunger for knowledge is infectious. I would highly recommend Paulette at sportsyoga.ie for climbers looking to develop razor sharp focus and maximise their breathing capability in challenging environments.

Everest 2014 expedition

On 18th April 2014 an avalanche in the Khumbu icefall between Everest Base Camp and Camp 1 claimed the lives of 16 Sherpa in the deadliest day in the history of Everest. I was on a nearby peak (Leboche East at 6119m) when the avalanche occurred, completing our final acclimitising climb before returning to Base Camp to prepare for our first trip to Camp 1 some three days later.

Over the following days, all climbing was suspended as the families, communities and region struggled to come to terms with the tragedy that had just unfolded. Sherpa returned to their villages to console and re-assure loved ones while climbers remained at Base Camp waiting to see what would or should happen next. Eventually it became clear that the Sherpa were not willing to continue with the seasons climbing, and on 25th April the difficult decision was made to cancel our 60-day expedition and return home.

While events beyond our control have sidetracked our ambition to climb to the top of the world in 2014, we are determined to somehow return to Everest in April 2015 to complete the job and in so doing complete the Seven Summits challenge of standing on the tallest mountains on all 7 continents.
