Colin Griffin- EAP3 Sportsyoga Program

I have worked with Colin since last November on a one to one basis . I took him through the complete EAP3 – Elite Athlete Peak Performance Program where I have included all aspects of yoga into his training program. As a 50km Race walker , Stability of the pelvis is very important , but also mobility of the hip joints and flexibility in the muscles  is vital for a good performance . Creating a balance within the body is the key to success for Athletes.

When I speak of balance ,most people would assume balance of muscle groups but The EAP3 program goes way beyond the physical aspect of training. Sportsyoga is the application of physical postures, control of breath and techniques on how to still the mind and how to cultivate good concentration ability.

I Included the practice of Yoga Nidra and visualisation to:

  1. Release latic acid from the muscles
  2. To  train the body and the mind to switch off – well deserved down time.
  3. To reinforce a new pattern of behaviour or beliefs.

Considering that Colin had received  two red cards at the 10km mark , he managed to have the mental focus, determination and stamina to continue on for another 40km and finish the race 6 minutes within The Olympic “A” Standard . What an achievment for an Athlete who had gained the reputation of being disqualified. Naturally I am one of the backstage crew working with Colin and we have all contributed  to his success. I am looking forward to re-grouping this week and continue to work with Colin on his successful journey to The London Olympics 2012.

A Recent Quote from Colin’s Blog,

” My Yoga instructor Paulette Egan also played a key role. Mobility and felexibility has always been a weak area of mine and I’ve tried several ways of addressing it. I began working with Paulette since last November and began to see obvious improvements in my mobility, but translating that into a more fluent technique in my sport has taken a while. As well as the mobility work that yoga involves, there is also the mindfulness work and breathing techniques that I had been working on with Paulette and that helped me stay calm and focussed in the heat of battle with so many external forces working against me. ”

THE EAP3 Program IS A PROCESS NOT A QUICK FIX !
