Paulette Points To: Wellness Day July 10th

Ever wondered what is meant by the term “wellness”?  It can mean many things to many people.   Dr. Halbert L. Dunn  defined wellness in the 1950 as: an integrated method of functioning which is oriented toward maximizing the potential of which the individual is capable. It requires that the individual maintain a continuum of balance and purposeful direction within the environment where he is functioning.” It could also be defined as actively becoming aware of and pro-actively making choices towards a more successful existence. If you can imagine yourself standing in the centre of a circle and looking closely at your entire being, you would find your weakness and the areas of your life that you may need to change. Here is a good example of how to break down your life into sections.

  • Emotional -An emotionally well person is both aware of and accepts a wide range of feelings in their life. They are able to freely express feelings and to manage feelings effectively to arrive at personal choices while continuing to remain open minded to their personal development.
  • Intellectual– Mental or intellectual wellness is evidenced by self-directed behaviour, which includes continuous acquisition, development, and articulation of critical thinking and expression.
  • Physical –This dimension is what most people think of first when they think of wellness. Physical wellness involves taking responsibility and care for minor illness and also knowing when professional medical attention is necessary. Physical wellness entails an understanding of the relationship between sound nutrition and the functioning of the body. Included in physical wellness is an awareness of the body’s true identity, depth of feelings, tension patterns, reactions, balance and harmony.
  • Spiritual-Spirituality is more than simply religion, though it may involve being engaged with organized religion for many people. Spirituality involved questioning all that is around them, and has an appreciation for that which cannot be completely understood. This person seeks to find harmony between that which lies within  in order to question the meaning and purpose in their own lives and the lives of others.
  • Social–   A socially well person takes an active role in promoting a healthy living environment, encourages effective communication among community members.  A person experiencing social wellness is living in harmony with their fellow human beings and seeks to preserve the beauty and balance of nature.
  • Occupational-  Occupational wellness is being happy in the workforce and in this hectic world of stress and technology, it can be difficult to find harmony and balance between work and rest.

I am holding a Wellness day in the Loft Yoga Studio, Clonlara, Co .Clare on July 10th. The day begins with a simple yoga stretching session suitable for all ages and ailments, followed by a stroll and lunch. In the afternoon, I cover the topic of the difference between mindfulness and meditation and how you can use simple techniques to introduce these into your life on a daily basis. The highlight of  the day is a Yoga Nidra therapeutic session where you can avail of this profound relaxation technique where you learn to train your body to lie in stillness and reap the amazing results of “Wellness” for the entire body . One or two places remaining and remember to keep an eye on my blogging ; Paulette Points To: !! Paulette 0863183646
